Impossibly sweet ...

Eight new collages were added to the Sweet Petites collection last week, and I have to say that they're adorable. And since adorable is not what I do generally, they came as a surprise.

M.T. Ross' whimsical illustrations from the 1910 edition of Elizabeth Gordon's "Flower Children," were used for the main characters, which may explain how they ended up the way they did. I wrote about my obsession with the images back in May, when I was about to sell some of the other originals at Cincinnati's City Flea.

Of course, I HAVE to create their opposites, or Not-So-Sweet petites. Stay tuned for those ... meanwhile, here are the cutie pies, which can be viewed in the annual "Multiplicity" holiday show at Cincinnati's Brazee Street Studios

New to the print bin

I made a recent decision limit the editions of prints of my larger collages. This way, the person who bought the original knows there will not be a zillion duplicates out there. With that in mind, there are some new prints available, some for the first time. You'll find them in the print bin at the studio during Friday's Open Studios (6-9 p.m.) at Brazee Street Studios. Or contact me directly about purchasing any of them.

A page of their own

© If You're Goin'
to San Francisco ...
All the Sweet Petite collages have been posted on a single page on the blog. Click this link or the one in the header at the top of the page to view them. The page is set up to allow online buying via PayPal. I'll update it as pieces sell, and when I make new ones. Of course, all are available at my Cincinnati studio (first floor, across from the gallery at Brazee Street Studios).

Animal attraction

Village Dandies
Footloose
(sold)

Last week, I mentioned a new line of "petite" collages I'm creating. They really ARE petite, that is:  2.5"x4.5" and 3.25"x4.6" - and matted in 5"x7" acid-free mats to fit ready-made frames.

Well, this week, I hit my stride with a series of animal collages - a first for me, except for birds, that is - for a fundraiser to aid a new Cincinnati non-profit: Pets In Need. It provides vet care for animals owned by low-income people, which could be anyone from a person who's been laid off from their job to someone with a serious illness whose income has been depleted by medical bills.

Pets are a passion of a good friend of mine, Carol Sanger, who chairs the board. So, when she asked me if I wanted to participate in their Summer Solstice Celebration, I jumped at the chance. Since the group is not charging any "set-up" fee or taking a commission on sales, I decided to donate part of my proceeds to them.

Well, enough of the back story, here are more of the petites ...

Surprises at tonight's Open Studio ...

New petite collages.

Since I missed the first two Open Studios of the year, I am pulling out all the stops for tonight's (6-9 p.m., Studio 1C, Brazee Street Studios in Oakley). First, I will be open at 5 p.m. Second, I also will be open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday).

Meanwhile, as I was creating a slew of new Fit To Be Tied collage tags/bookmarks, some grew a bit more complex and a tiny bit larger. Voila! Sweet Petites were born. Yeah, the name's a bit precious, but til I come up with something better, well, that's it.

The first five in the series feature antique engravings of women from Godey's Lady's Book and Peterson's Magazine; Victorian flower scraps (thanks Shirley Tenhover); vintage paper flowers and dried flowers (thanks Tim Leslie). They are matted in acid-free, conservation grade mats and ready to pop into  a standard 5" x 7" frame.

New Fit To Be Tied ® collage tags in the works.
When I said a slew of tags, I meant it. That's them, above, on the work table, awaiting laminating - new this time around - hole punching and their vintage seam binding ribbons. Finished them last night, just in a nick of time.

Last, but certainly not least on this Father's Day weekend, finally got my act together and had a pile of vintage 1932-33 car ads from Fortune magazine matted. The over-sized ads - 11" X 14" - are in mint condition, the mats are wide and conservation grade, and, of course, they're matted to fit a standard-size frame. As much as I love the car ones, well, the Firestone tire ads are the real eye-poppers.

Gratitude: a top 10

Instead of the normal top 10 moments of 2012, I thought I'd post Top 10 Thanks to ...

The Grand Tour: Submerged (sold)
... art buyers near and far for buying my art, sure, but also for buying any art.

... the warm and welcoming members of the 5th Street Gallery for not only inviting me to show at the gallery, but, also asking me to join the cooperative.

... the gallery and shop owners who took a risk and began carrying my greeting cards, or continued to: Sharon Butler (The BonBonerie), Emily Buddendeck (NVISION), Carolyn and Mike Deininger (MiCA 12/v), Lynn Kahle (The Framery) and Wendy Smith (Redtree).

... the Brazee Street Studios artists and staff who make going to my studio so much fun. I love my new space on the first floor.

... the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center, for honoring me by offering limited-edition prints of collages from my Grand Tour series as a membership gift. And to its gallery director Bill Seitz for asking me to show in annual The Art of Food exhibition, and, for challenging me to think bigger as I head into 2013.

... the writers covering/reviewing the visual arts for Aeqai, Cincy, Cincinnati Magazine, CityBeat, The Enquirer and Express.

... Celene Hawkins for including my work in the Flora & Fauna exhibition at Bromwell's Gallery, a show that pushed me to create more shadowbox collages (sample, above). And the women of The Studio Collection for inviting me to be a guest artist at their 18th annual sale. Wow. It was huge.

... local framers who are artist-friendly: I take my work to Lynn Kahle of The Framery and Tim Leslie (above, working on the Victor Victorian series) but there are plenty of others around. These two have been super generous with advice, tips, etc. You know your framer's a gem when he or she talks you out of spending more money!

... my husband, Mark, for the gift of an archival inkjet printer (first prints from it, above), the countless hours spent reconditioning my letterpress and his undying support of my third act.

... all the people who generously recycled their old paper - from S&H stamps and antique books to vintage greeting cards and paper dolls - via Paper With a Past. I promise to use it wisely, well, and maybe not so wisely. LOL.
